Guides have the benefit of increasing their knowledge
and professional skills through a variety of training and educational
programs:
The Professional Development Program, required for all
new members and Certified Master Guide candidates, includes three
day-long workshops concentrating on guiding and presentation techniques
and group management skills essential to the professional tourist
guide. A written exam and tour skills evaluation follows. Successful
completion leads to Full membership.
Membership (Business) Meetings, with programs
and speakers at sites of interest to the guiding profession, are
offered monthly. The Guild’s Education Committee
offers approximately 35 additional programs each year that include
FAM trips, topic and site lectures and tours, and an annual all-day
Education Seminar.
The Certified Master Guide Program is
a 5-7 year voluntary program for Full members, which includes
advanced continuing education, business skills, and recognized
contributions to the tourism industry. The program culminates
in a written and practical exam.
