Guild Guides Offer Tours Beyond
the Monuments
So you’ve seen the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson
Memorials, the Capitol, White House and a few other noteworthy landmarks.
You’ve toured Washington, right? Well, sort of. That’s
a standard itinerary. But there is much more to the national Capital
beyond these most obvious tourist attractions. There are other historic
sites and buildings, off-the-routine-route neighborhoods and many
tales – some amusing, some spooky and some even true - - from
the Capital City’s two-century history that many residents,
let alone visitors, never see or hear about.
The Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington, D.C. has the
remedy for that oversight. The Guild has compiled a listing from
its membership of guides offering a wide choice of specialized tours.
These range from ghosts (The Capitol is full them, as is the White
House) to scandals to spies to less goose-bump-raising themes such
as presidential homes (apart from the White House), African-American
history, Civil War sites, distinctive neighborhoods, and the lasting
impressions First Ladies and other women have left on the city.
Guides knowledgeable in these and many more areas of the Capital’s
long and eventful history can be booked for large and small group
tours. For more information, visit the Hire
a Guild Tour Guide page or call the Guild’s Job Line and
leave a message to request a guide at 202-298-1125.
The Guild of Professional Tour Guides is a not-for-profit association
established in 1985. It sets professional standards, provides support
services, conducts continuing education programs and works with
other local, national, and international public and private sector
organizations on tourism-related issues.
