Message from the President

Many thanks to our Nominating Committee Chair, Steve Kline, for staffing his committee with experienced Guild members you'll see listed in the article about the work of the nominating committee. We have a former Guild President (Sandra Sheskin), several people with past board experience (Rob Stanchik, Kathy Draper), a current board member (John Days) and a current committee member (Jamie Johnson, a member of the web strategies committee). They have broad knowledge of the Guild and its activities, but they need input from the membership. Do read Steve’s write-up, and note that Bette Runck wrote a special piece about the job of the Guild secretary. If you are ready to volunteer for a leadership position, I can promise you that you’ll be in the company of talented and dedicated professionals.

Another big thank you to Shirley Timashev and Jodi Volk who are using a new desktop publishing program to give the Capital Guide Online a new look when we have a lot of material for you. The May edition looked great and I really appreciate their efforts to keep us informed, especially during these busy months.

Don’t forget to take note of outstanding motor coach operators and an individual or organization who provides valuable service. We’ll be calling for award nominations in September. Please see Mary Beth Lane's write up below.

In the craziness of overcrowded memorials, museums, and streets — and dealing with overpacked itineraries… take a step back, take a deep breath and remember to keep smiling!

Guild Book Group on July 6

Event: Guild Book Group
Date: July 6, 2017
Time: 1pm
Location: Tenley-Friendship DC Public Library 4450 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington DC

Guild Book Group meetings are open to all Guild members who do the chosen reading in advance. The topic of the next meeting is "Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America."The discussion is guaranteed to be lively and there will be a focus on why this reading is useful to DC guides.The event will be teleconferenced for those who cannot attend in person. Register on the Guild website if you intend to read the book and join in the discussion on July 6.

"Rising Tide," byJohn Barry,has been described as "an American epic of science, politics, race, honor, high society, and the Mississippi River... The book tells the riveting and nearly forgotten story of the greatest natural disaster this country has ever known... The river inundated the homes of nearly one million people, helped elect Huey Long governor and made Herbert Hoover president. The flood drove hundreds of thousands of blacks north and transformed American society and politics forever" according to an Amazon.com review.

So. register on the Guild website, read the book, and join the discussion on July 6.

GuildSide Chat on July 18

Monthly GuildSide Chats are resuming with the end of the season. These one-hour informal discussions are an excellent way to meet with other guides, discuss various issues and topics of interest to our profession, and share information, tea and sympathy with each other! Experienced guides can offer new guides advice on questions they may have and we can all contribute to each other's skills and knowledge.

We will meet at noon on July 18 at the National Portrait Gallery courtyard. This month's topic will focus, as it often does in July, on the season just ending. Bring with you your best and worst moments this spring. Tell us your biggest challenge and how you dealt with it. We will all learn from our various "trials by fire."

These events are great fun. No reservations necessary and no fee. Come if you can. (Guild Guides and CMG Candidates earn 1 participation point for attendance).

Suggestions for New Officers Due August 1

 

The Guild uses a nominating committee to identify a slate of leadership candidates for your approval. We need your input to accomplish that goal. Our committee is now considering potential candidates for the 2018-2019 slate of Guild officers:

president,1st vice president, 2nd vice president, treasurer, secretary, Guild guide representative, and affiliate guide representative.

August 1 is the deadline for Guild members to submit suggestions, including self nominations, for those positions. Nominees excluding the Affiliate representative, must all be Guild Certified Guides, and the nominee for President must have served on the Board in either an elected or appointed position. Share your suggestions with me or any nominating committee member.

Position of Guild Secretary
As the incumbent I encourage fellow members to consider serving as Guild secretary, starting in January 2018. The responsibilities are simple. You attend the monthly board of directors meetings and produce minutes of the proceedings. Compared with other Board positions, this one requires less time. But, unlike other Board members, you must pay attention during the entire meeting.No napping! The big reward for serving on the board is learning how the Guild works and contributing to its progress. I would be happy to talk with you if you want to know more about this position.

Guild Award Nominations

As the spring guiding season draws to a close, think about the best drivers you have had. You have probably encountered at least one motor coach operator you think is worthy of a nomination for the Guild's award.Please write your nomination (emails are fine), and capture that good feeling that the MCO gave to you as you were touring with this person. I will keep all nominations in a file until later this fall. A detailed submission will assist the awards committee members as they review each nomination.
Below are the guidelines for the several categories of Guild awards. I encourage you to consider colleagues you have worked with, encountered, or observed.You may also want to nominate someone for the Tourism Industry Contribution Award.
Motor Coach Operator Award---A coach operator (local or regional) who has best contributed to the team spirit of guiding and to the care and comfort of passengers including the condition of the coach. The recipient will also receive a cash award if he or she accepts the award in person. Each nominee's employer will also receive a letter from the Guild informing the company of the coach operator's nomination.
Blakeman Award---A Guild Certified Guide member, excluding current Guild president and immediate past president, whose work best exemplifies the spirit of the Guild, who has made an original and significant contribution to the operations of the Guild and who has advanced the guiding profession in some other significant way.
Tourism Industry Contribution Award--- An individual or organization, not necessarily a Guild member, that has provided particularly valuable and distinguished service to the Guild, the guiding profession, or tourism in the Washington area.

Guild Business Meetings -- July 11 and August 15

The next Guild business meeting will be on July 11 from 9:30 am - noon at the U.S. Institute of Peace, 2301 Constitution Ave. NW, Washington, DC.Information about the program will be on the Guild website and in the nextCapital Guide Online.

The August business meeting will be on August 15 from 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm at the National Museum of Women in the Arts,1250 New York Ave. NW, Washington, DC.Mark your calendar if you will be in town, and stay tuned for further information.
