The theme of the afternoon is the momentous year of 1919 and the events leading up to it, focused on the Great War and Women's Suffrage. Our guest speakers are familiar young faces in the DC history, museum, and tourism communities. Using material from their recently published books they will present illustrated lectures featuring local sites, people, events, and details that guides can use in their commentaries.

Garrett Peck is an author, historian and tour guide in the nation's capital. He leads tours through The Smithsonian Associates, and his Temperance Tour of Prohibition-related sites has been featured on C-SPAN Book TV and the History Channel program "Ten Things You Didn't Know About" with punk rock legend Henry Rollins. He is featured in an upcoming two-hour documentary about Prohibition by the Smithsonian Channel. His seventh book, The Great War in America: World War I and Its Aftermath was published in December 2018.

Rebecca Boggs Roberts is a program coordinator for Smithsonian Associates, a writer, historian, journalist, NPR radio show host, and tour guide. Her current book, Suffragists in Washington, DC: The 1913 Parade and the Fight for the Vote tells the story of "The Great Suffrage Parade," the first civil rights march to use the nation's capital as a backdrop, and documents the tactics utilized by Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party that finally resulted in women earning the vote with ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920.
