Discover one of DC’s most unusual art and event spaces – under Dupont Circle. Opened in 1949 as a trolley station, 15,000 square feet of underground platforms and tunnels were closed off in 1962, when the city’s streetcar system shut down. Other than designation as fallout shelter in the late 1960s and hosting a short-lived food court on the west platform in the mid-1990s, the space remained empty. Today, the non-profit organization Dupont Underground has transformed the abandoned space into an art gallery and performance space used by a variety of groups. We will tour the space and learn more about the past, present and future of the subterranean tunnels.

Meet at the Dupont Underground entrance on 19th Street (next to Starbucks)   Look for the orange railing.  Note: Stairway access is the only way to get in to Dupont Underground. Be prepared to walk on uneven surfaces. No restrooms once you enter the underground, so plan accordingly. Contact: Pat Abler at
