Bess, a native of North Carolina, enjoyed a career as a college professor of history. She taught in Georgia, Iowa and Oregon, abroad in Italy and Croatia, and for Semester at Sea. She has lived in DC for 10 years and joined the Guild in 2013. In addition to guiding, Bess has been a docent for the Smithsonian Museum of American History and the U.S. Capitol. She is also a shipboard lecturer for American Cruise Lines.
