A Message from the President

Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me to continue as Guild president for the 2018-2019 term. You have voted in an excellent team of officers who I look forward to working with over the next two years. Each of our new officers have devoted many volunteer hours to our Guild and I have no doubt that they will continue to devote many more in their new roles.

Thanks to so many of you who attended the Mount Vernon Update and Business Meeting. Roy Young, Vice President of Guest Experience, commented about how much he appreciated speaking with us since we were such an engaging and knowledgeable group. When our new Board is installed in January 2018, Mr. Young has offered to work with our Training Committee to put together a program geared just for Guild members.

You may notice some changes in our website over the next several months. We have hired a consultant to assist with some of the more technical aspects. We have several board members, along with our Guild administrator, who can usually figure out how to make technical changes, but occasionally we get miffed and none of us can figure it out. That's when we'll call in the expert consultant.

I hope to see many of you at the business meeting at Lincoln Cottage on Tuesday, October 10, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. Since becoming President, I have had many guides tell me that they really want to attend more business meetings but because they are during the day, or because they are always on Tuesdays, they cannot attend. I'm listening and trying to accommodate everyone. The Lincoln Cottage meeting will be special in several ways - an evening meeting with a tour and a tribute to a former member, Armen Tashdinian, whose generosity is giving us the opportunity to learn more about President Lincoln and his life at the cottage. I hope you will plan to join us for this unique opportunity.

Time to Renew

Guild Membership Renewals - 2018
Guild members have until November 30 to pay renewal dues and are encouraged to pay via the Guild website with credit card or Pay Pal. Alternatively, you can mail in your affirmation of the revised Code of Ethics along with your payment to our Guild Administrator, or renew in person at a Guild business meeting this fall.

DC Tour Guide License Renewals
All DC tour guide licenses will expire on December 31, 2017. Be on the lookout in your email for a message from DCRA regarding renewal procedures.

Liability Insurance for Tour Guides
Renewal of the Guild group liability insurance policy is scheduled to begin November 1. Registration for participation in the group policy can be now made via the Calendar of Events on the Guild website until October 31. The individual participation premium is $76.Note that liability insurance is a deductible business expense.
This type of professional liability insurance is very difficult to obtain at reasonable cost outside the Guild. The key benefit of the coverage is that it provides legal representation in the event a participant is sued specific to the terms of the policy.

 





GuildSide Chat on October 18

Event: GuildSide Chat

Time: 10 am to 11 am
Place: Library ofCongress Madison Building Cafeteria (6th Floor).

This month's topic will focus on preparing for the Job Fair on October 23. Even "old hands" can learn how to better prepare for interviews with tour companies at this important event. We will broaden the discussion to include how to find tour jobs in general.

These one-hour informal discussions are an excellent way to meet with other guides, discuss various issues and topics of interest to our profession, and share information, tea and sympathy with each other. Experienced guides can offer new guides advice on questions they may have. We can all contribute to each other's skills and knowledge.

These events are great fun. No reservations necessary and no fee. Guild Guides and CMG candidates earn participation points. Questions? Contact Tammy Belden.





National Gallery of Art Training on October 19

Event: National Gallery of Art training

The Guild training committee and the National Gallery of Art are proud to present this very special training program for the first time.It is sold out, and due to high demand it will be offered again.This workshop gives an overview of the museum and highlights for personal tours with clients. The program covers both buildings as well as a brief tour of the Sculpture Garden.We will break down into groups to be led by trained docents, who will weave in insights and best practices from their years giving Gallery tours.

ANC Update, Job Fair, Showcase on October 23

The Guild is delighted that WIMSA will be hosting the Arlington National Cemetery Update and on the same day, our Annual Job Fair and Showcase. Only organizations and individuals who are current members of the Guild may attend the afternoon event, which gives guides the opportunity meet with Affiliates and discuss upcoming tours and job opportunities. Bring your resumes with your smiles to schedule your spring season. Professional dress encouraged and will enhance your opportunity to get hired. Remember to wear your Guild badge and DCRA license in case any Affiliates ask for it. You will also have an opportunity to meet with some of our Friend members to learn about their products and services. As of this date 17 Affiliates and 5 Friends have registered to attend. If you cannot attend you may mail 20 copies of your resume to Tammy Belden (see President's Message for address).





Washington National Cathedral Training

Event: Washington National Cathedral Certification Training
Dates: Tuesday, Oct. 24; Thursday, Nov. 2; Wednesday, Nov. 15
Time: 9 am - 12:30 pm
Place: 3101 Wisconsin Ave. NW

Being certified by the Cathedral is useful because it gives you more flexibility in tour times and makes you more valuable for many tour operators. Register online to attend one of three training sessions designed to teach, reinforce, and augment your knowledge of the art, architecture, mission, and policies of the 20th century Gothic cathedral.
Attending training is Step 1 of the certification process. Each Guild guide wishing to be certified to present Cathedral tours, must attend one of these three sessions.
Step 2 of the certification requires testing. Details regarding who needs to be tested and who remains certified will be provided in the near future.
If you wish to make a donation for the ongoing repairs for earthquake damage, you will find a basket for donations located at the check-in desk. Why is the Motor Coach Workshop so important?
Well…routing, timing and commentary are the backbone of a great tour!

This fall we will conduct the Motorcoach Guiding Workshop during the week so we can offer practical ways to experience daily traffic that we guide in on a day-to-day basis. Also, timing your commentary is also quite important whether you’re sitting in traffic or cruising down Pennsylvania Avenue.The workshop is open to all levels of the Guild, but keep in mind this workshop is a requirement to advance from Guild Guide to Guild Certified Guide. So if this is your opportunity to advance, let us know!

The final read for this year is Warmth of Other Suns (2011), by Isabel Wilkerson. An Amazon.com review describes this book as “[an] epic, beautifully written masterwork.” In it “the Pulitzer Prize–winning author chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life.” This book was recommended by several Guild members who have already read it and want to participate in the group discussion. Annual Guild Get-away
